Rolex Capri Sailing Week - 1st Series European Circuit English Version

Day two of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week.

Capri , Italy. 17th May 2007.

On day two of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week, organized by the Yacht Club Capri in collaboration with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, over 50 competing yachts left the island’s Marina Grande headed for the regatta course positioned between Capri and Naples. The predicted rain did not arrive and cloudy skies gave way to sunshine before the starting signal sounded for the first of the four divisions. Winds of around five to six knots from south east, which would later shift to south westerly, accompanied the fleet as the Race Committee set the same courses as yesterday for the four competing divisions: the Swan 45s and Farr 40s raced a windward-leeward course of approximately 8 nautical miles while the Mini Maxi and Comet divisions sailed approximately 13.5 nautical miles around the buoys.

In the first race of the day Gianluigi Serena’s Enfant Terrible (ITA), with America’s Cup sailor Paolo Cian calling tactics, came in first ahead of former World Champion Jim Richardson’s Barking Mad (USA), while Carlo Alberini’s Calvi (ITA) took third place. Race two of the day, the fifth of the event so far for this division, saw Massimo Mezzaroma’s  Nerone (ITA) lead the fleet across the finish line ahead of Calvi and Dario Ferrari’s Cannonball (ITA). A fourth place gained in this regatta was sufficient for Barking Mad to move into first place overall ahead of Lang Walker’s Kokomo (AUS). After a fantastic first day in which they gained two firsts and a fifth, Kokomo only managed thirteenth and ninth in today’s regattas and are now sitting ten points behind Barking Mad in second place and just two points ahead of former Farr 40 World and European Champion Nerone in third.

Major Flippo Petrucci, official meteorologist for the event predicts a north- north westerly wind of around 6 to 8 knots for tomorrow morning which should strengthen to around 12 to 16 knots in the afternoon as it shifts round to north-north easterly. Racing is scheduled to begin at 12 midday.
